Thanks for the encouragement. I hope that I’ll get Pihlaja working. There’s a lot of work to be done. But I’m pretty sure now, that it will get done. Sooner or later.

Maybe Pihlaja will be the second pro open-source video editor on linux with Cinelerra (and later, Lumiera).
I expect this programme eagerly.
Open source movies aren’t an utopie now, that’s decided, my next movie (and maybe all my future movies) will be “Open Rush”…
Forgive my poor English, i’m only french…

Thank you very much for your encouragement. It’s really nice to hear that some people are as excited about this as I am. It’s also nice to hear that you’ve tried it. I hope you did atleast get some video playing…
I’m really hoping for the next release to be actually usable for some simple editing. But it might take a while, as I can’t work on it fulltime like I have for the last 6 months. I’ll still work on it as much as I possibly can, so I’m not stopping until it’s working.

One note for everybody is that Pihlaja currently doesn’t work under a composited environment for some reason. Atleast the monitor picture (xoverlay) will get hidden as soon as you press play. I’ve tried to get it working but haven’t managed to do so… But it will get fixed at some point.

Hey! Just posting to give you some encouragement. I’m following this programs development and am excited about it. In fact, it is very similar to an editing program design I came up with but I can’t really code so I’m excited with what you’re doing. I tried out the Ubuntu binary and I’m looking forward to the next release.

And just to answer the earlier questions publicly too:

1) I know of Cinelerra (and now I know of the CV community version too). I once tried to install it during Mandrake 7 or 8. But as one might guess, those were the dark days (of free software in general), and it didn’t work. So I never used it. But it looks good on the features part.
Why don’t I help Cinelerra instead of developing my own editor? I have a wierd user interface idea that I want to accomplish, and I think it isn’t possible with joining already established projects. Also I want my project to fall on some of the “standards” that I like: D, Gtk, GStreamer. That’s my (current) platform of choice.

2) Pihlaja will be a non-linear editor quite unlike anything people have ever seen. But before that you can propably use it for very simple editing. No effects or compositing for another two years at least (let’s make that five years to be realistic). (Unless some other coders join the project, which would be much appreciated.)

I’ll just comment this myself: I got the dynamic pads problems solved, by removing some stuff (I removed a concept of default movies that were outputting black, those were somehow messing the dynamic pads creation).

Still no export and no xoverlay (monitors inside the main window.) But I’m working on xoverlay now. It seems it’s a bit more complicated than I thought as it’s a separate library that I have to use (libgstinterfaces or something like that). So I’ll actually have to wrap some more functions with gtkWrapper.

Pihlaja is a word in finnish for a tree with red berries and white flowers. (You can’t practically eat the berries because they are so sour.)
Hope I got these correct:
The tree is “rowan tree” in english (also known as “mountain ash”, I think…).
“Sorbus aucuparia” in latin.
“Rönn” på svenska.
“Eberesche” auf deutch.
“Sorbier” en français.
And it seems it’s spread all around Europe and it’s siblings can be found in Asia and America too. Although I showed it to one person from central Europe, and she had never seen one.
Pihlaja should be pronounced in the following way: All the parts are pronounced separately. Pih - la - ya. But you’re not supposed to leave any pauses - it’s just one word. The letter J is pronounced as Y (in english pronounciation). It’s not supposed to be Pihlaaza nor Pihlaia.
